“I feel extremely liberated when I dance because
I do whatever I want to do.”
– Camille Jones
To epitomise the narrator’s sense of liberation through movement, this monumoment consists of footprints taken from her favourite choreographic phrase/movement to commemorate where her journey, spanning a period of 7 years, as a dancer began. It became a formative journey that has had a profound impact on her life; an empowering and affirming experience, which she describes as something akin to literally stepping back into her own body, voice, confidence, and (re)learning how to appreciate herself and body. Many of us will relate to this powerful idea of stepping into oneself, as it is universal. It speaks to the common expression of ‘finding oneself’, something some of us have had to do at some point in our lives.
To make this commemoration concrete, we have etched the prints into the pavement outside the dance studio were she trained as a dancer. No one but the narrator knows what the choreography is, but the footprints are numbered in a chronological sequence, to guide and invite us to follow in her footsteps, to walk in her shoes, deciphering the dance’s hidden language/meaning.
How to interact:
This monumoment is a call to action. As no one knows what the actual choreography is, this monumoment invites you to (re)create what you think it was. Your clues are the footprints.
Firstly, it calls for you to retrace what you think the original choreography is. Take a video of yourself, share it on your social media, and tag us. The specific hashtag to use for this first part is:
#RetracingInHerShoes
Secondly, this monumoment isn’t just about retracing her steps, better yet, it is also an inspiring challenge to craft your own choreography ‘in her shoes,’ forging your own path while honouring her story. You are invited to freestyle, to find your unique footing, to leave a trace of your mark behind. Take a video of yourself, share it on your social media, and tag us. The specific hashtag to use for this first part is:
#FreestylingInHerShoes
RE-TRACE. RE-CREATE. RE-SHARE.
We recommend Sean Paul’s Gimme The Light as a tune to dance to, but you can also use whatever gets you moving.
