Rico On The Run

I have a van that I can park or stay whatever I want.
That’s my home.
–  Chollada Phinitduang

As someone who has been travelling a lot, both literally, that she has been moving from place to place, and figuratively, being from two cultures and never feeling entirely settled in either of them, her sense of identity is always in changing. This could explain why a life on the move has become both a means to an end and an end in itself, i.e. the search for something to call home, but also the journey itself has become a kind of a home. This dialectic is one of the fascinating thing about her life journey, and her monumoment calls for us to embrace it.

LEFT: Chollada’s original campervan. TOP and BOTTOM: The van we recreated into Rico.

So, we have decided to buy a van and decorate it like Rico. This van is a mobile monumoment, it carries a slice of her life, which the narrator is generously sharing with the public. Inside, it contains a section dedicated to her story, including an album pictures of her journeys, places she visited with the van, a small library of books to read while you are on your journey, etc.

How to interact:

We invite you to book Rico your own personalised trips. The idea is that you can book it for a weekend or week for a memorable trip with family or friends. In exchange, all we ask is that you document your trip and leave some of your experience behind for others to see or read about. More specifically, you’ll be required to write a journal entry into our hyttebok and take 10 polaroid pictures (you’ll keep 5 and leave 5 in the van). With the traces of your stories left behind, the van becomes a moving archive or mobile library of people’s journeys throughout Norway and beyond.

Our hyttebok and polaroid camera are waiting to reflect your experiences.

It is free to rent the van, but for those who can, we ask you to consider making a donation to support us with the maintenance costs.
